World Junior U20 - Adam Bremner - 01-08-2012

For anyone interested, the world u20 starts tomorrow in Athens. Scotland is being represented by Jonathan Edwards and Clement Sreeves, in what is a very strong field. Looks like they will both be facing IMs over 2470 in r1, so a great opportunity for them to start with decent wins. The results and pairings can be found here: http://chess-results.com/tnr76324.aspx? ... ES&flag=30. Good luck to them both!

How did day 1 go?

Good luck for this tournament guys! =)

Re: World Junior U20 - Adam Bremner - 03-08-2012

Day 1 was two losses.

IM Shyam Sundar M 2486 0 1 - 0 0 Sreeves Clement 2191

Edwards Jonathan 2170 0 0 - 1 0 IM Indjic Aleksandar 2481

Clement had a tough game as black against a rapidly improving Indian IM, who scored 7/9 at the Hastings event we all went to at New Year. Jonny's game was very interesting, and he had a very dangerous attack that tore through his opponent's defences, and was winning to the tune of +6, but unfortunately missed a tactic and was ground down by good technique. Both guys have Greek fillers today, so a good opportunity to move onto 1/2.

Re: World Junior U20 - David G Congalton - 07-08-2012

Glad to see Jonathan put a couple of wins together. I was concerned for a bit.

Clement has had some very tough opponents and has another IM in round 7. His tournament performance is currently 87 points above his published FIDE rating, which is impressive in such a quality field.

Re: World Junior U20 - Adam Bremner - 08-08-2012

Having finally gotten over his IM curse at the Czech last month, things are looking good for Clement. String a few wins together here and he can start looking to norm hunt.

Jonny has battled back well. After the disappointment of r1 it is easy to get into a bad streak, especially in an event where most nations have serious 2600+ GMs prepping their team for our players. Tomorrow I believe his opponent will have Nigel Short to help him prep! It is amazing what 2/2 can do for confidence and maybe he can keep the wins going.

I just hope they can get back to b24 or above to get on the live boards again!

Jonathan drew round 7, which raises the question (for me) as to what could he have done with similar support to his English opponent?

No result through yet for Clement.

It is a very valid point. Interesting to note that Jonny played Ravi at Hastings 6 months ago and won with black. Apparently the English no longer have Short as he was there for only a few days, but are now being backed up by Hebden, who at 2550, is a fairly handy player to have in your corner. There is not a lot can be done about this, but it does show that they are stronger than their TPRs might suggest.

Draw for Clement against a 2438 Argentinian IM. Good stuff.

Re: World Junior U20 - David G Congalton - 08-08-2012

How many rounds do they play?

Come on Clement you're within touching distance of the live boards.

Another couple of good results and Jonathan can get on the live boards too.

Clement's TPR 2300. +109.

Jonathan's TPR now heading in the right direction.
