One of the wierdest finishes... - Andy Howie - 10-12-2011 Playing lightning online and the following happened (I am white) [pgn][Event "Live Chess"] [Site "Chess.com"] [Date "2011.12.10"] [White "Wellfan"] [Black "valere"] [Result "1-0"] [TimeControl "2|1"] [Termination "Wellfan won by checkmate"] 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nc3 g6 3.e4 d6 4.Bd3 Bg7 5.e5 dxe5 6.dxe5 Nfd7 7.Nf3 Nxe5 8.Nxe5 Bxe5 9.Bh6 Nc6 10.O-O Be6 11.Qe2 Bf6 12.Rfd1 Qb8 13.Bb5 a5 14.Nd5 Bxd5 15.Rxd5 e6 16.Bxc6+ bxc6 17.Rd2 Qb6 18.Rad1 Qxb2 19.Rd7 Qxa2 20.h3 a4 21.Rxc7 a3 22.Rdd7 Qb2 23.Qc4 a2 24.Qxc6 a1=Q+ 25.Rd1# 1-0[/pgn] Re: One of the wierdest finishes... - Andrew McHarg - 13-12-2011 lol - Fun game. It's always nice to protect your own King whilst simultaneously mating the opponent. =P Re: One of the wierdest finishes... - Patrick McGovern - 20-03-2012 i had to look twice at this one, very good, lol ![]() RE: One of the wierdest finishes... - WBuchanan - 05-01-2025 Talking of finishes - from a recent blitz game I had against Peter Jamieson, where I was white. Black to move. I was happy with my position - my pieces are blocking his pawns, and I have threats of my own. Scroll down for what happened next. ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... Black played 1...Nxb2!! 2 Kxb2 There's no alternative; if the queen moves Black will take the rook on d1, and c2 will be on. 2 ...Qxc2+!! A shocking move. I can decline with Ka1 but after ...a4, White is overrun. 3 Qxc2 3... d3+ A deadly discovered check. The queen has to be returned and suddenly Black's firing on all lines. Eg Kc1 Rxc2+ Kb1 Rb2+ Kc1 and Black mates with his unmoved rook, Rc8. 0-1. Yes, it's a good one. N x b2 is the obvious try, but I was expecting a4 next. The closed diagonal being opened is one of those amazing hidden ideas. I've seen a lot of examples of this sort of thing recently, because I've been studying 'Turbocharge Your Tactics' from Quality Chess (no payment received for this endorsement). Great books, but evidently not that effective in my case ![]() RE: One of the wierdest finishes... - Alex McFarlane - 16-01-2025 What's this? Discussing chess on the CS Forum!! I'm sure that is a six month ban ![]() RE: One of the wierdest finishes... - WBuchanan - 23-01-2025 (16-01-2025, 01:48 PM)Robert Lothian Wrote:(05-01-2025, 10:05 PM)WBuchanan Wrote: Talking of finishes - from a recent blitz game I had against Peter Jamieson, where I was white. |
