World Youth Championships - David G Congalton - 15-11-2011

I'll be in Oban when this starts so I'll wish all of our juniors taking part in the event the best of luck. Having had the pleasure of playing Colin and Anna during the year, watching Cristina's games at the British Championships and in Scotland throughout last season and chatting to Ali at events during the season, I'm delighted to see them taking part in this years world youth championships.

I hope you all enjoy the Championships, which is important and get results that you are happy with, which I'm sure is more important to you. Keep us up to date, if you can, with how things are going.

Best Wishes

David

Ps It would be nice to see a report on the event by one of our participants in the next Chess Scotland magazine.

Re: World Youth Championships - Angus McDonald - 19-11-2011

Hi all,

Been very difficult to get internet connection so apologies for lack of an update.

After a few teething problems the squad are starting to settle down in their so far sunny and hot location in a central area of Brazil (Goias State)

In the first round our youngsters have had a really tough day but all gave it everything and some were very
unlucky to get nothing out of their endeavours. Andrew Newton was totally winning and got cheapo'd at the end of his game. Hamish held his 2312 opponent all the way and had him very worrid with only 10 minutes to Hamish's 30 minutes left on clock in an equal looking position. Hamish had bishops for Knights but eventually his opponents advanced knights won the day. Then at the very end of the day Maryann accepted a draw offer from her higher rated opponent to get our first half point. What a tough day! but our youngsters are a credit to themselves their families and CS. I expect them to come out stonger today.
We are all safe and well and I'd say up for it.

Angus

Re: World Youth Championships - Andy Howie - 19-11-2011

Well done to Maryann. That's a result not to be sniffed at!

For those who tried to watch the live games and were late, (like me) the time difference is -3 hours! I don't know why but I got it into my head it was -5.

I have a feeling Angus is right and we will start to see the results that the play deserves soon

Re: World Youth Championships - Mike Scott - 19-11-2011

Well done to Maryann!
It so important to keep that focus and attention, not for 85mins but the full 90 mins plus injury time to use a footie analogy.

I had feared that jet lag might be a bit of problem but hopefully if its only -3 hours its not too bad?

Re: World Youth Championships - Angus McDonald - 20-11-2011

Starting to settle into the tournament but facing a double round day tomorrow so heading to bed early.

Wins today for Ali, Anna, Hamish and Ian. Draw for Colin. Tough luck for all the other players with Andrew and Cristina both very close to scoring today.

Will try and give a more detailed report tomorrow night.

Re: World Youth Championships - Derek Howie - 20-11-2011

Time difference is only -2 hours which came as a surprise to me.

Re: World Youth Championships - Andy Howie - 20-11-2011
