R.G. Wade

1953

The New Zealand/English master Robert Wade visited Scotland many times during his long chess career, always being willing to help promote chess in any way possible. Here are details of a long stay in Scotland in 1953.

During a stay of over two months in Glasgow, the British Champion, R.G. Wade, gave numerous displays and talks, participated in various tourneys, and played a match of eight games with the former British and Scottish Champion, W.A. Fairhurst. This encounter ended in a decisive win for R.G. Wade by 5½-2½. Two small tourneys in Glasgow resulted as follows-

No. 1 (February 18th to 24th, 1953):
1-2. P.B. Anderson and R.G. Wade 2½; 3. A. Aird Thomson 1; 4. Dr M. Rose 0.

No. 2 (March 21st to 28th): 1. R.G. Wade 2½; 2. C.W. Marshall 1½; 3. L. Delfin and T. Russell 1.

Giving talks and simultaneous displays the British Champion visited Glasgow CC (+14, =5, -3), Glasgow Jewish Institute (+21, =9, -2), Dundee CC (+15, =5, -2), Glasgow University College Club (+11, =1, -1), Central CC (lecture), Ayr (+18, =1), Glasgow Ladies (+19, =1), Paisley (lecture), and Lithgow (+16, =1, -2). In addition during visits to eight Glasgow schools he played a total of 182 games simultaneously (+171, =6, -5).

The Scottish C.A. will run an Invitational International Tournament from July 27th to August 5th, probably in Glasgow. Eight players will take part and acceptances have already been received from Dr J.M. Aitken, W.A. Fairhurst, H. Golombek, J. Penrose, R.G. Wade and D.A. Yanofsky.
