Boris Spassky in Scotland - 1987

Former world champion Boris Spassky was engaged for a simultaneous display in Glasgow on Friday, 25 September 1987. However, rather than the usual format of players paying for the opportunity to play, it was decided that the winners of the respective sections of the Glasgow Congress would be offered the chance to face Spassky. The scene was set by the following article in Scottish Chess 100 of September 1987.

A detailed report of the event appeared in Scottish Chess 101, November 1987
