The photo may have been taken to celebrate the club winning the 1st Division of the Glasgow League in 1953. Mr Knopfler is on the far right, next to him is Frank Slotopolsky, then Stanley Mann. The figure on the left has yet to be identified.

Mr Knopfler, an architect, married Louisa Mary Laidler in Newcastle in 1944. He was the father of Ruth (1947, Newcastle), Mark (1949, Glasgow) and David Knopfler (1952, Glasgow). The Scottish Chess Association Yearbook for 1953-54 gives the address 30 Wheatfield Road, Westerton. The 1957 Electoral Register showed the home address as 137 Morse Road, Scotstounhill, Glasgow. Later, the family moved to Newcastle.

Mark and David would later form the band 'Dire Straits'. See Douglas Bryson's article on Mr Knopfler for further information.

Thanks to Steve Mannion (snr) for confirming the presence of Frank Slotopolsky.

Thanks also to Harvey Kaplan of the Scottish Jewish Archives Centre in Glasgow and Sharon Mail, Scottish Correspondent, Jewish Telegraph Group of Newspapers. Sharon wrote an article for the Jewish Telegraph (Friday October 19, 2012) which featured this photograph, requesting assistance with identification from readers. Mrs Helen Mann responded, identifying her late husband Stanley Mann.
