David Bronstein

East Kilbride Open 1992

Ideally, John Dykes, the organiser of the event and Bronstein's host, would have supplied personal comments for this article, but at the time of writing (June 2012) John is ill and not able to do so. We invite him to contribute when he is feeling better.

It is not often that a former World Champion candidate turns up at a weekend tournament in Scotland 'out of the blue', but that is in effect what happened when the great David Bronstein (1924-2006) played in the East Kilbride Open in May 1992.

Bronstein had many successes in his long career, including a drawn World Championship match with Botvinnik in 1951. [For further information see, for example, his Wikipedia entry.]

As John Henderson pointed out in his column in The Scotsman of 14 December 2006, Bronstein ' would invariably pay homage to where he was by playing an opening either named after the locale or a famous player associated with the area.' One of the most celebrated examples of this was when he faced C.H.O'D. Alexander at Hastings 1953/54. The game opened with 1. d2-d4 f7-f5 and Bronstein continued with the Staunton Gambit 2. e2-e4 in a game that resulted in a win for Alexander after 120 moves, and massive publicity for chess.

Bronstein played in a similar vein in the opening round at East Kilbride (or East Tilbridge, as the tournament was listed in 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice', by Bronstein and Fürstenberg, Cadogan Chess, 1995) when he opted for the Scotch Game.

Thanks to Paul Denham and Jim Johnston for answering questions, and clarifying information about the photograph. Also, thanks to Alistair Maxwell for efficiently preserving copies of Bronstein's games.
