Reverend John Young

Died: 04 November 1963 (aged 88), Glasgow

We report with regret the death of the Rev. John Young of Glasgow; a life-long chess enthusiast, supporter of many clubs (principally Greenock CC) and editor of a chess column in the Greenock Telegraph for many years.

Notes:
Went to Greenock 1909, joined local chess club.
Member of the Greenock CC team that won the Spens Cup in 1911 and 1923 (photos of winning teams).

Married 5th September 1916 in Glasgow.

Started chess colum in Greenock Telegraph September 1923, ran for 16 yrs, stopped when WWII started.
Arranged a series of correspondence matches.
1929 – went to Oban. Started a club because of chess players among servicemen based there.
Wife died.
1947 – retired and went to Glasgow, re-joined Central CC.
1951 Joined Glasgow CC around 1951

Also edited a chess column in the Church magazine Young Scotland, a monthly production published by the Church Committees on Youth. (Further information sought.)
