James Anderson Stewart

The Glasgow Herald chess column of Saturday, 16 April 1938 reported that 'Mr J.A. Stewart, B.Sc., who has just graduated B.L., removes next week to London, where he has received a professional appointment. Mr Stewart has for some years been an active and valued member of the Scottish Chess Association, and of Polytechnic CC, in which spheres he will be missed.'

The Glasgow Herald chess column of 19 July 1941 reported that 'Mr J. Anderson Stewart has been called to the Bar by the Middle Temple, London. Mr Stewart is a well-known member of Polytechnic CC and a good friend of the game in Scotland.'

Several obituaries that appeared in the BCM were submitted by a 'J.A.S., which may have been Mr Stewart. [James McKee, BCM 1940, p 200; D.M. MacIsaac, BCM 1961, p 104, for example.)
