Michael Paton

 07 November 1859, Glasgow ─ 30 January 1948, Glasgow

The Glasgow Herald chess column of 6 February 1948, p 2 gave his date of death and stated that Mr Paton had been a member of the Bohemian CC [Glasgow]. It also mentioned that he was 'the last surviving member of the Dumbarton football team famous in the eighties, and played five times for Scotland.'

A search of the web confirmed details of Mr Paton's five appearances in international football matches for Scotland.

1. 10 March 1883: winning 3-2 against England away (Friendly)
2. 29 March 1884: winning 4-1 against Wales at home (British Championship)

5. 27 March 1886: drawing 1-1 against England at home (British Championship)

He did not score any goals. He played for Dumbarton at club football during all of this period, and was on the team that won the Scottish Cup in 1883.
