Thomas Murray

1801, Paisley ─ 1884, Glasgow

Member of Glasgow Chess Club

Mr Murray was the founder of the publishing house of Thomas Murray & Son, Glasgow, which operated out of 8 Argyle Street and, later, 31 Buchanan Street.

He was for several years a member of Glasgow Town Council ('Bailie Murray') and was for some time a Magistrate of the city.

He played for the 'Old' club in the match against the 'New' club in February 1865.

It is not known when he joined Glasgow CC; a fire at the business premises of his son, Alexander K. Murray, destroyed many important club documents and a Minute Book.
