  • Member of Polytechnic Chess Club, Glasgow.
  • Scottish Boys' Champion 1952.
  • On Scotland's Glorney Cup team 1953 and 1955.
  • Member of Polytechnic team that won the Richardson Cup 1957.
  • West of Scotland Champion 1957 (after a play-off with Michael Fallone).
  • Shared 3rd & 4th places at the British Universities' Individual Championship, Glasgow, 1957.
  • On Glasgow University team that won the Northern preliminary section of the British Universities' team championship for 1958 (included Edinburgh and Durham Universities).

In the 1960s he worked for Rolls-Royce in Derbyshire. He finished in third place with 5/7 in the 1961/2 Derbyshire Championship, which was won by the well-known ex-British Champion Alan Phillips with 6.5/7, followed by ex-Warwickshire Champion Stan Gibbins with 6/7. Iain played for the Rolls-Royce club in the Derbyshire League, his last appearances being in the 1963/4 season. (Thanks to Mick Alderson of the Derbyshire Chess Association for this information.)
