The death took place at his home in Larbert on Wednesday of Mr Thomas McGrouther, F.S.A. (Scot.), vice-president of the Scottish Chess Association, and a member since 1895 of Glasgow CC, of which he was a former president. Mr McGrouther, a native of Falkirk and a well-known lawyer in Glasgow, was in his 83rd year.

The Falkirk Herald of 9 July 1941 gave similar information, adding that Mr McGrouther was a bachelor, an antiquarian and an archeologist, and had an interest in history, social customs and folklore.

From The History of Glasgow Chess Club (unpublished)
'... July saw the demise of Thomas McGrouther aged 82, a member of the Club and of Falkirk CC since 1895. He was 'very regular at the club; his ripe wisdom and counsel in legal and chess matters were always freely available to the executive and were found highly beneficial on many occasions. He was formerly an efficient Hon Secretary and compiled then a fairly complete history of the Club from old records. He was later President, and Hon Auditor for at least 35 years. He was a generous donor and worker in the cause of chess. He was a strong player, probably stronger than his match results suggested'.
