A significant figure in the history of Queen's Park Chess Club, Glasgow (formed 1873), and the club's first president. He was a regular visitor for 49 years, occupying latterly the position of Hon. President.

Also associated with Glasgow Chess Club, of which he was a member for over 40 years.

It is a wonder Dr Duncan had time for any chess activities at all, considering the number of public roles with which he was connected.
