Alexander Munro Davie

Born: 04 April 1946, Dundee

  • Scottish Boys' Champion 1960, 1962 (tied with Ken McAlpine for the 1961 event, but lost the play-off);
  • member of the Glorney Cup team 1961/2/3/4;
  • Scottish Champion 1964, 1966 and 1969;
  • member of the Scottish team at the 13th World Student Team Chess Championship at Örebro 1966;
  • played in the Zonal tournament at The Hague 1966, but was obliged to withdraw because of illness after four rounds;
  • played in the 1968 Olympiad at Lugano.

Influenced and encouraged by Nancy Elder, many times Scottish Ladies' Champion, the chess organiser at Davie's school in Dundee. Others who helped influence the young Davie were E.G.W. Beckingham, Harry Deas and Ed Gollnock, at the Dundee Chess Club.

Other tournaments: British Under Eighteen Championship 1963, an event won by Scotland's Peter Jamieson with 9½/13 (Ken McAlpine also played, scoring 9);
British Championships of 1964, 1965, 1967, 1970;
Dundee 1967 International Tournament.

Sandy Davie is currently (2010) a Professor of Mathematics at Edinburgh University.
