Arthur Ford Cariss

c1886, England ─ 21 May 1967, Glasgow

The 1901 census shows Cariss (15), apprentice electrician, living at 142 Aitkenhead Road, Glasgow with Ralph and Bessie Cariss.

In 1912 he married Edith Tudor Crossley at Cathcart, Glasgow.

Cariss was associated with several Glasgow chess clubs; Bohemian, Polytechnic and Glasgow.

He defeated Alekhine and Sir George Thomas in simultaneous displays in 1923 and 1936 respectively, and drew against Eliskases in 1933.

Cariss was in the Bohemian CC teams that won the Spens Cup in 1924, 1929 and 1937.

Played for the West of Scotland versus the East in the matches of 1923, 1925, 1928 and 1931.
