Ramsgate 1929 - Premier 'A' Tournament

The Kent County Chess Congress was held at Ramsgate, beginning on Saturday, March 30th. The main event was a 'Scheveningen' system tournament of seven foreign masters to play against each of seven British players.

In the Premier Tournament (Section A) the Scottish champion William Gibson had a notable victory, winning the tournament with a score of 5½ points from seven games. It was rare in those days to see a Scottish player venturing forth to do battle in such tournaments, never mind score such a success.

He drew with Rellstab (Germany), who would go on to have a long and distinguished career, and defeated Gibaud (France) and Noteboom (Holland). Daniel Noteboom would become an outstanding player, representing Holland at the Olympiads at Hamburg 1930 and Prague 1931. He died tragically young in 1932, just short of his 22nd birthday. Gibson's only loss was to the English player Drewitt in the final round. Rellstab, who began the last round with 4½ points could have tied Gibson for first place, had he won his encounter.
