John Nunn Training Weekend
One of Britain's top grandmasters, Dr John Nunn, was the spearhead in the first grandmaster-led junior training in Scotland, held in Glasgow's Central Hotel on the weekend 11/12 June.

Nunn is a 28-year-old who, two and a half years ago, gave up his university lectureship to take up chess professionally.

Sponsored by the Central Hotel and by the British Chess Educational Trust, the weekend attracted almost all of Scotland's top juniors, including Mark Condie.

The event was timed just before the majority of juniors set off during the summer to international events throughout the world, with Condie going to the World Junior in France and Paul Hampton travelling to the World Under-16 in Colombia.

A total of 21 players, ranging in age from 11 to 18, were lectured by or played against Nunn and Scottish players Colin McNab and Alan Scrimgour, two of Scotland's regular junior coaches.

The weekend was combined with an exhibition, also sponsored by the hotel, in which Nunn played a group of 24 players simultaneously. The group included several Scottish youth internationalists and produced an interesting tussle with Nunn winning 15, drawing 5 and losing 4.
