Scotland v Switzerland 1972

Under-19 Telephone Match

Report from Scottish Chess, number 33, February 1973, p 12.

This second Under-19 telephone match against Switzerland was again run by the SJCA [Scottish Junior Chess Association] and sponsored in sumptious fashion by James Robertson and Sons, Paisley. It took place on Sunday, 12th November at the Macdonald Hotel, Glasgow [sic. Giffnock], and was a singularly close and exciting encounter. The final score was in doubt at the end of play, adjudication being necessary on several boards.

Board 2: Iain lost a pawn early in the game, but his opponent played steadily under some pressure to win.

Board 3: Although Stephen regained his pawn from a Morra Gambit, he allowed his opponent's rook to infiltrate in a Rook and Pawn ending.

Board 4: Alan Radlow's last game for Scotland before he emigrated to Australia [he came back - AMcG]. He had fine play for a sacrificed pawn and looked like winning but overlooked a neat combination in time trouble. Scotland will miss this imaginative youngster.

Board 5: David played with great flair and won queen for Rook and Bishop. However, a weak pawn fell and his opponent's resources were enough to draw.

Board 6: Stephen won the exchange for a pawn and produced a good win from a difficult ending.

Board 7: In a tough game, Douglas always had a slight edge but just never enough to win.

Board 8: Alan seemd on the receiving end when his opponent blundered. Thereafter, the win was efficiently secured.

Thomson, I suspect, was another representative of the sponsor. Findlay's name is spelled wrongly in the caption. The lower photo shows, from left to right, Swanson, Sinclair and Findlay.[AMcG]
