Scottish Championship 1930

The 43rd annual Congress of the Scottish Chess Association opened at Dundee on Friday, April 18, 1930, under the auspices of the Dundee Chess Club.

Although the entry was small, the competition was hard; Gibson had won the championship on seven previous occasions; Dr Macdonald had won six times; Page won in 1925, and Miss Gilchrist had been the Scottish Ladies' Champion three times, was the current British Ladies' Champion, and would go on to win the British Ladies' title again in 1934. James Gilchrist, from Glasgow, (not related to Miss Gilchrist), was at the time based in Ireland because of his professional duties. Ian Hamilton was a young player in his early twenties from Edinburgh.

William Gibson secured his eighth win of the title (his ninth and final title would be in 1931). Miss Gilchrist had a fine score, drawing with Gibson and Macdonald and defeating Page.

Miss Gilchristès only loss was against her namesake in the first round. Also in the photo is Mrs J. F. Thomson, who was playing in the Ladies' championship, and H.J.M. Thoms of Dundee CC.
