Scottish Championship 1925

The 38th annual Congress of the Scottish Chess Association Scotland opened at the Edinburgh Chess Club on Good Friday, 10 April.

There were eight entries, all from Edinburgh and Glasgow except for Dr Macdonald (Inverness). The veteran James Marshall intended to play, but found himself unable to do so. His place was taken by Hives of Edinburgh CC.

The players were welcomed by J. Gordon Laing, the Edinburgh club president, who was accompanied by J.G. Thomson and J.M. Nichol, the last named representing the SCA.

The most significant feature of the tournament, however, was the presence of lady competitors in the main championship tournament for the first time. Miss Florence Hutchison Stirling had won the Scottish Ladies' Championship five times, and Miss Gilchrist had won in the years 1921-23 and would go on to win it again in 1938.
