Richardson History

The finals of the SCA team competitions were played at Grangemouth on Saturday 21 April. For once the Richardson Cup had an overwhelming favourite in holders Glasgow Polytechnic.

Bon Accord had performed heroically in reaching the final, aided by a notable solidity in depth. However, this is also a feature of the Polytechnic team and their greater firepower proved completely decisive on the day.

First to win was Lyons who picked up a piece through his opponent's incorrect combination. Shaw's excellent position soon bore fruit and Byrne suddenly won a piece. When Swan's R+B+N for Q proved decisive it was effectively over.

Watt and Perez nursed extra pawns to victory and Kirk beat Grassie, leaving Finnie to pick up a consolation draw after having much the better of his game with Davis.

In the Spens Cup final Musselburgh proved much too strong for Edinburgh Civil Service. They took an early two-point lead which was never in danger.

The Jack Campbell Rosebowl final was closely fought and indeed provided the only games to go significantly into the quickplay finish section. Glenrothes took an early lead but Borders fought back and it became clear that Pyrich would have to win the top board game against Bain to produce a 3-3 result. This he eventually did by being faster with his pawns in a double rook ending, giving Glenrothes the trophy on board count tiebreak.
