Spens Cup 1956

The final round of the Spens Cup chess competition was won at Ayr on Saturday by the Central Club, Glasgow, and with the trophy they regain the position which they lost two years ago, as one of the eight leading chess clubs in Scotland who compete for the Richardson Cup.

Central beat Ayr 5-2 but the match was closer than the score suggests and it was only on the lower boards that Ayr were seen at a disadvantage.

Ayr players had the move on boards 2, 4, and 7. After nearly four hours' play the match was decided by a Central win on board 5 where Steele completed a long and deep attack opened in the early middle-game with the sacrifice of the exchange. A draw on the top board followed and agreed draws on boards 3 and 4.
