Spens Cup 1935

The final was between two Glasgow clubs, and was played at the Southern YMCA, on Saturday 13 April. Polytechnic had the white pieces on the odd numbered boards.

Play in most of the games was much below the standard expected. Blunders were made on both sides, particularly at the top three boards. At boards 1 and 3, the Queen's Park players lost a piece in each case by an oversight, while at board 5 the Polytechnic player went astray in the opening, lost the exchange, and got a hopeless game at the eighth move.

A draw at board 6 and wins for Polytechnic at boards 4 and 5 gave them the lead by 3½ to 2½ with the game at board 7 to finish. The Queen's Park player had accepted a King's Gambit and had retained the extra pawn with a winning ending, but failed to find the correct continuation, allowing his opponent to regain the pawn and draw.
