Richardson Cup 1997-1998
Main Tournament
The 1997-1998 Richardson Cup was retained by the holders Crowwood CC who recorded
their second win of the trophy. This was also the last year that the Richardson Finalists
automatically qualified for the last 16 of the Leigh BCF National Club Championship, an
arrangement which started in 1984-85 with the Sponsorship by Legal and General.
This season also saw the start of a new seeding system. Seeding had previously been based on
the previous season's semi-finalists, with the finalists in opposite halves of the draw.
From this season, the last 3 season's performances were taken into account with points being
allocated to the semi-finalists and finalists in each of these seasons, with a weighting
towards more recent seasons. Where a tie occurs, more recent performances are used to break
the tie. The seeds are shown by number in the tables.
Number 1 seeding didn't help Polytechnic who were surprisingly eliminated by Ardrossan in round 1.
In the relegation playoff they met another traditionally strong side - Edinburgh.
