David Watt provided a wonderful report about the final in the High School of Glasgow Bulletin of 23 June 1969:-

The Richardson Cup has been won for the second year in succession by Glasgow University Union, who defeated Golasgow CC 4-3 in the Final in an atmosphere of tragic-comedy.

The match started peacefully enough, our pre-match confidence being boosted by Giulian's non-appearance for 50 minutes. Events soon took a sensational turn, however, as Partis seemed to lose in no time at all; on boards 2, 3 and 6 our positions were deteriorating rapidly; and boards 4 and 7 were unclear and getting unclearer. Only Levy was playing convincingly, building up a microscopic advantage. However, we looked set for a crushing 2-5 defeat.

Slowly the tides turned. Nye, in typical fashion, sacrificed a piece to reduce Brodie's control of space from two ranks to one, whereupon Brodie counter-sacrificed to increase it to three. Jamieson achieved a long-awaited win, and Young reached a drawn Queen-endgame which he won with ease. Levy finished off Fairhurst with a satisfactory combination. I played my last 8 moves in a minute because I had to; Marshall played at a similar rate because he felt like it, and in the process missed several easy wins.

When the dust settled, we were 3-2 up with rather the better of the other two; but we just agreed draws to secure the match.

We had shown our capacity to recover from nasty situations more than once before, but this was stretching a point!!
