SCOTTISH LIGHTNING CHAMPIONSHIP

The Scottish Lightning Championship was held on the evening of Monday 4th July in the Caledonian Hotel, Oban.  24 players took part.  The lightning is now played with digital clocks and a time control of 3 minutes with a maximum of 3 seconds being added with each move.  Pre-tournament favourite was Keti Arakhamia-Grant who was about 200 points above her nearest rival.  However, the form book was to be thrown out of the window and it was Steven Tweedie who stormed to the title with a magnificent 7/7.  Stephen, the number 3 seed defeated the first, second and fourth seeds on his triumphant march.  Daniel McGowan won second prize with the grading prize shared by Michael Duke and John Gibson.

  1st Steven Tweedie 7/7; 2nd Daniel McGowan 5½; 3rd= Graeme Kafka, Ian Jamieson, Ed Spencer 5; 6th K Arakhamia Grant 4½, 7th M Duke, J Gibson, A Tate, C Macdonald, A Burnett 4; 12th= D Fowler, N Thomson D Campbell 3½, 15 D Coope, K Stewart, M Chisholm 3; 18= P Smith, S Collins 2½; 20= N Irving, D Watson, A Clark 2; 23 I Clark 1; 24 B Wallace ½.

From an organisers point of view it was good to see such a large number of Championship players competing.

Quiz Night  The team of parents taking part lived up to its name of 'Dumb Blondes' and picked up the wooden spoon.  It is very unfair of anyone to say that the only reason Nan Kafka now has blonde hair is to warn people of how stupid she really is!!

Distillery Visit  Several players went on the visit to the Oban Distillery.  It is believed one or two may have a legitimate excuse for their poor result on Thursday afternoon.

Football  Humiliation for the East.  With two players over 50 the legs just didn't last against a youthful West team.  The final score is a bit of a mystery but West scored in excess of 30 goals and the East about half that!
