ROWSON WINS SCOTTISH

Jonathan Rowson took outright 1st place in the 2004 Scottish Championships held in Hamilton.

IM Jacob Aagaard secured a 2nd GM norm.

The tournament table is given below.

Jonathan Rowson had a storming finish to regain the Scottish Championship title. His four straight wins included a victory over fellow GM Colin McNab, who only the previous round had defeated Scotland's other GM Paul Motwani.  With three rounds to go Jonathan was a point of the lead held by Danish IM Jacob Aagaard who is now living in Glasgow following his recent marriage. Jacob took second place and secured a second GM norm.

The organiser had several problems in getting this event together but the venue found at fairly short notice proved to be more than adequate and with the exception of a short time on the Saturday the innovation of having the bar/canteen in the playing hall worked very well.  The death of Brian McGuire (Henderson) meant that a substitute had to be brought in during the first round otherwise any chances of a norm for John Shaw, who had been paired against Brian would have gone. Fortunately Alistair Maxwell stepped in.  For the following rounds the tournament continued with 18 players as Sam Collins moved to his first choice event, the Seniors.

No further problems were encountered and under the supervision of Donald Wilson the remainder of the tournament ran smoothly.

Can I thank the players for making this an extremely good Scottish Congress.  Can I also thank the team who helped run things over the week.  I would particularly like to thank George Anderson for taking the entries and Donald Wilson for the magnificent effort he has put in acting as Chief Arbiter and doing so many of the jobs I should have been doing.

Alex McFarlane (Congress Director)
