1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.exd5 exd5 4.Nf3 Bd6 5.c4!? Believe it or not, I had never seen this before. 5...Qe7+?! A try for some activity, but it doesn't work out well. Better would be [5...dxc4 6.Bxc4 Ne7÷] 6.Be2 dxc4 7.0-0 Nf6 8.Bxc4 0-0 9.Nc3 Bg4 10.Bg5 Nbd7 11.h3 Bh5? [11...Bxf3 is probably forced] 12.g4 Bg6 13.Re1 Qd8 14.Ne5! Here I think I must lose the exchange. 14...c6? [14...h6 15.Nxg6 hxg5 16.Nxf8 Kxf8± seems to be the best of a bad lot] 15.f4 Qb6 16.Bxf6 Nxf6 17.f5 Rfe8 18.fxg6? [18.Na4! wins more quickly!] 18...Rxe5 19.gxf7+ Kf8 20.Qd2 Rxe1+ [20...Bc5 was what I had intended, but it didn't look so good once I got to this point!] 21.Rxe1 Qc7 22.Ne4 Bf4 [22...Nxe4 last for a little longer, but all is lost now. I saw what was coming and enjoyed the prettiness of the pure mate, so did not resign. I went on to use the same opening for white in the next round and was very successful. I am afraid the French's days are numbered unless I can find a remedy for this opening!] 23.Qb4+ Qe7 24.Nxf6 Qxb4 25.Nxh7# 1-0
