Chess Scotland Coaches and Chaperons
These lists of Chess Coaches and Chaperons registered with Chess Scotland, give details of people who have been the subject of enhanced disclosure through the Central Registered Body in Scotland (CRBS) and are published in pursuance of the Child Protection Policy, of Chess Scotland (CS) Policy Documents. This notice explains what people should do if they wish to be included in that list. Application contact details
It is expected that parents and others will place increasing reliance on the lists as being a quick way to identify who would be suitable to coach or chaperon children and/or vulnerable adults. The lists will be particularly useful where parents do not already know the individual coaches or chaperons.

Chess Coaches
To be included in the list as a chess coach an applicant requires to meet four conditions (as with other aspects of Child Protection policy, these conditions may be amended in the future): -
- Be a member of CS (where a membership lapses, the person will automatically be removed from the list)
- Achieve a satisfactory outcome of an enhanced disclosure and be a member of the PVG Scheme, (Protection of Vulnerable Groups under the PVG Scotland Act, 2007)
- Have a national chess grading
- Sign a Job Description and Declaration.
There will be no other form of competency test. This decision recognises that relatively weak players can make a huge contribution to chess by having a good manner in dealing with children whereas stronger players have an irreplaceable role in developing more advanced youngsters and adults. CS has decided to publish the grade of each coach by way of background information. It is worth noting that anyone not on the list but offering chess coaching does not have CS registration.
The advantages of achieving registered Coach status are: -
- The list of Coaches and contact details will be published on the CS website; the list will be kept up to date.
- The website will state that anyone not on the list but offering chess coaching does not have CS registration.
- No disclosure fee is charged where applicants are Chess Scotland volunteers who are prepared to offer their coaching skills on a voluntary basis for activities organised by Chess Scotland. Where anyone is planning to embark on a purely business venture as a chess coach without that volunteer element, it is open to them as an individual, to obtain membership of the PVG scheme direct with the authorities, on payment of a fee, without involvement of Chess Scotland.
- The website list will be used as the reference point by parents and other existing and potential customers as well as by CS officials in identifying chess coaches recognised by Chess Scotland.

Applications for Coach and Chaperon Registration
Anyone wishing to apply for registration as a chess coach or chaperon should Email Steve Mannion Snr with full contact details. He or the assistant signatory, Dick Heathwood, will arrange for you to complete the relevant forms and give you details of the documentary evidence that you must produce. The assistant signatory is authorised both by CS and by CRBS to act on behalf of Steve Mannion (Snr). Throughout the enhanced disclosure process, all applications will be dealt with in strict confidence and to the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.
Chess Scotland also operates a service to build confidence that legal obligations are being met at local clubs and congresses. The service is mainly addressing situations where clubs and congresses are specifically aimed at the participation of juniors but may be considered relevant in other cases, e.g. where a local club for adults operates a junior training programme or a congress is running a junior event. The detailed operation of the service is explained in the page Club Coaches
Full details of the various policy documents which have been registered with the relevant authority, CRBS, together with the explanation of the underlying thinking are published on the CS website; Policy Documents.
