AK Millar Trophy controller Pat McConnell was astonished by two things in this years event - the completion of most round 1 ties by the scheduled date and the receipt of a result card from Holy Cross. A large entry in the AK Millar Trophy, assisted by the new grading based handicap system rather than the team division based system, saw a few surprise results in round 1, not the least of which was the elimination of league champions Poly A by Cumbernauld. Even perennial AK Millar winners Shettleston dodn't have it all their own way against Inverclyde, when IM Douglas Bryson at board 1, giving away time on the clock to Kevin McDonald, found the handicap too much and lost, although his team live to fight another day. And with no less than 3 Holy Cross teams in the last 16, perhaps Pat has a few more surprises in store !
