Scottish Junior Chess Association Educational Fund

The Scottish Junior Chess Association (SJCA) Educational Trust is a Scottish registered charity that aims to promote junior chess development in Scotland. Established in 1969, the Trust seeks to promote:

1. the study of chess among young players aged under 21 in Scotland; and

2.chess in Scottish schools, colleges, universities and other educational establishments.

Underlying both of these objectives is a view, now underpinned by a large body of international academic research, that studying and playing chess offers wide educational as well as recreational benefit.

Since 1969, the Trust has supported many individuals, teams and chess events, including the international Glorney and Faber Cup events, when held in Scotland. Subject to financial prudence and at the Trustees’ discretion, the Trust may decide to manage, part-manage or simply support a range of possible activities in pursuit of its objectives, such as, for example:

- instruction for individuals or groups;

- chess tournaments, matches and competitions for young players; or

- chess in schools projects.

The Trust is registered as a charity (SC010264) with the Office of the Scottish Charities Regulator (OSCR) and with HMRC. It invites donations from individuals, legacies and corporate entities. Individual donations can be made directly to the Trust by cash or cheque (made out to SJCA Educational Trust), or they can be made through an employer Give as You Earn scheme or from a Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) Charity Account (see http://www.cafonline.org/)

Under Gift Aid rules, if you are a UK taxpayer, the Trust can reclaim 28p of the tax you pay for every £1 you donate, subject to the receipt of a donor “declaration” (rate held in the 2008 Budget to 2011). Higher rate taxpayers who complete a self-assessment return can also opt to donate a further 23p of tax paid for every £1 donated (see section 19a of the return).

Give as You Earn and CAF Charity Account donations include tax (at the donor’s highest tax-rate) and require no further donor or Trust action.

To make a contribution to the Trust (including how to make a tax compliant donor “declaration”), contact the Treasurer:
