Scottish Schools Primary Team Chess Championship 2007-2008
The Chess Scotland Primary Team Championship has been running for over 20 years and is open to all Scottish Primary Schools. In addition to the main Primary Team Championship there is a separate competition for younger "P5 & Under" teams. (This does not mean that younger pupils are excluded from the main Primary Team Championship: they may play as part of a school’s primary team, or may even enter the main Championship as an entire team, if they wish.)
A school may enter one or more teams, each of 4 players, arranged in order of playing strength. There will be two stages to the competition: a local first round and a national final. There will be up to 8 first round sections, depending on how many teams enter. To minimise travel, first-round sections will be based on broad geographical areas, with matches arranged in a central location, convenient for the schools in each section.
In general, all first-round matches will be played on a Saturday or Sunday between January and March. Dates and venues for each section will be arranged locally once the total number of entries is known.
Depending on the number of teams entering, the first-round heat may take the form of an “All-play-All” or "Swiss" team tournament. Both the Winners and Runners-up from each section will go through to the national final. In the event of ties for first or second place, tie-breaking rules will be applied.
Teams in the Lothian region who play in the Lothian Primary Schools League may also be entered in the Chess Scotland Primary Team Championship and the first Lothian League round will double as a qualifying heat for the Chess Scotland Primary Team competition. Contact Jeremy Hughes ( jeremy.hughes@ed.ac.uk ) for further details of this. All teams entering this way must still submit entry forms to Mrs MacGregor, so she can contact teams directly with details of the final.
Teams from Lothian and East of Scotland who are NOT playing in the Lothian Primary Schools league, who wish to enter the Primary 5 and Under competition, or who miss the Lothian qualifying heat should contact Mrs MacGregor directly to be entered into another first round heat.
The final stage of the competition will take place in April or May 2008 at a central location. This will be a 5-round "Swiss" team tournament. Both the Primary Team Championship Final and the "P5&Under" Team Championships Final will be held at the same venue on the same day.
Each participating school must register with Chess Scotland. This is free of charge and can be done simply by completing the attached entry form. Entries should be sent in as soon as possible and definitely before 16th November. The cost is £8 per team. There is no additional fee for teams which progress to the final.
For planning purposes it is much easier for us to cope with withdrawals than late entries. So if you are uncertain that your pupils are ready, don’t worry – just sign up now!!
Full details of the rules of the competition will be sent out with the first round draw. Further information can be obtained from:
