2007-8 Chess Scotland Primary Schools Team Championship
Update - March 3 2008
by Christine MacGregor
This year's Chess Scotland Primary Team Championship looks like being the largest ever. There will be 16 teams in the final, representing schools from the far north (Golspie) to the south-west ( Dumfries).
First-round matches have already taken place, in Lothians (Edinburgh, October), West/South-West ( Paisley, January) and Borders (Galashiels, February). The final qualifying match (Glenrothes, April) will cover Fife, Tayside and Perthshire.
The following teams will play in the final, which will take place on Sunday 18 th May in Dunblane:
Bishopton, Bonaly, Earlston, Georgetown, Golspie, James Gillespies, Jordanhill, Kirkhill, Parsons Green, St Mary's, Sciennes, West Kilbride and four qualifiers from the Glenrothes heat.
The Primary 5 and under Team Championship will also take place in May at the same time as the All-Primary final. Again we have the largest ever field with 14 teams registered to take part. These are:
Bishopton, Blackness, Bonaly, Georgetown, Hillside, Holy Cross, Holy Family, James Gillespies, Jordanhill, Kirkhill, Sciennes (2 teams), South Morningside, West Kilbride.
The standard of play at the Paisley heat was outstanding. Kirkhill emerged as clear winners. They won in all five rounds, dropping only 2½ board points in the whole day. They are a very strong contender for the final and will be the team to beat! Medals were also awarded to runners-up Bishopton, to Georgetown who came 3 rd and for the best board scores from the remaining teams.
As we had an odd number of teams, an ad-hoc adult team “The Big Yins”, including Matthew Thomas and Michael Miller, provided a challenge to the unpaired team during the first two rounds. In the last three rounds this turned into a simultaneous chess challenge.
