Selection Criteria – Guidelines

These criteria apply to selection for the following events:

•  World Youth Championships (U10, U12, U14, U16, U18)

•  World Junior Championship (U20)

•  European Youth Championships (U10, U12, U14, U16, U18)

•  Glorney & Faber Cups

•  European Youth Team Championships

•  Tri-Nations (U12, U14, U18)

The criteria to be considered when selecting juniors for these events are as follows:

•  Published CS grading

The Current CS grading will also be taken into account, as will the rate of progress over the preceding couple of years.

Rating will be considered in the light of the individual's age as an indication of potential.

•  Activity

The Selection Committee will consider the level of participation in local and national events. The strength of the events entered, as well as the results obtained, will be taken into account. Participation in stronger events will be looked on favourably - ambitious juniors are encouraged to enter the strongest events possible.

For younger age-groups, participation in national events, such as the Primary Individual Championships, is recommended. (updated 7/05/2007)

•  Youth Squad involvement

Players selected for international events will be encouraged to join the Youth Squad.

It must be remembered that the aim of Youth Squad meetings is to instruct members on how to train themselves, rather than to impart any specific knowledge on the day. Accordingly, CS Coaches at Youth Squad events will look for evidence of a high level of personal study. Juniors are particularly encouraged to work on the annotation of their own games.

•  Chess Scotland membership

In order to represent Chess Scotland at an international event, individuals must be members of Chess Scotland. (updated 7/05/2007)

•  Temperament

Prospective candidates for selection should be aware that CS wishes to be represented by individuals who display the highest levels of commitment and sportsmanship. Juniors are strongly encouraged to behave accordingly.
