Georges Emile Barbier

b. 24 February 1844, Besançon , France

d.16 December 1895, France

Barbier spent much of his life as a teacher, first in Yorkshire and then in Scotland .

For many years he edited a chess column in the Glasgow Weekly Citizen.

He was highly regarded both as a player and problem composer, and he was an active member of Glasgow Chess Club.

A few weeks before his death he had gone to France in the hope of improving his health.
