Scottish Championship 1901

The eighteenth annual tournament of the Scottish Chess Association opened at the Athenaeum, Glasgow, on Friday evening, 24th May. The entries for the Championship and Major Tournament were disappointing, owing to their small number, but the standard was high.

The present champion, Mr D.Y. Mills, competed, but he was not in very good form. His play lacked the deadly accuracy observable in previous contests. As it was he tied with Dr Macdonald, of Foyers, and to suit the doctor's convenience he agreed to stake the result on the decisive game, which Dr Macdonald having the move, won, owing to a bad blunder by Mr Mills....
