Submitting Results played outside Scotland
for CHESS SCOTLAND (CS) Grading
Self-Submission Games played by individuals outside Scotland
will be graded by Chess Scotland (CS) if the individual, or the manager
in charge of a Scottish team, submits the results directly to the
Chief Grader. This only applies to Main List results - rapidplay games
played outside Scotland will not be graded.
Results will only be included for CS members. If you are not currently a member join now and any outside Scotland results for this season can be retrospectively included.
Example of how to submit data:
To submit data please list results in the following format.
Your name, Your pnum,
Name of Event, Dates of event,
Your Colour - Name of opponent - opponent's grade - source of grade (is it a CS Grade, FIDE grade or an ECF grade - the order of priority is CS, FIDE, ECF) - the result from your point of view 1, 0, 0.5 or words WIN, LOSS, DRAW.
For example:
Jonathan Rowson, pnum 5864,
British Championship, August 7-18 2006,
1) Black v Bret Addison 2241 (FIDE) 1,
2) White v Max Devereux 2377 (FIDE) 0.5,
etc.
Please email the list of results to grading@chessscotland.com
Please note it is not sufficient to point out a web page where a crosstable exists as the result submission. All the data has to be manually input so you can help the grading process if you use the format indicated and type out your list of results.
Leading Players NB: It is expected that all leading adult
and junior players will submit all results. This is not optional.
To ensure that all selections are made on the same basis all leading
junior and senior players must submit all results.
General Player International selection will not be an issue
for the majority of players. In those cases it is up to the individual
player to decide what they want to do about games they play outside
Scotland. CS will be happy to rate outside results free of charge
for members only. Games outside Scotland will not be rated for non-members.
Players must be consistent in the way they submit outside results.
Either you submit all your outside results every year or you submit
none. You cannot be selective.
What is your opponent's grade? The biggest difficulty in
rating results outside Scotland is getting an accurate rating figure
for the opponent.
When submitting results please use the following rules (see notes
below):
1) If the player has a CS rating use that first; if no CS rating
use FIDE; if no CS or FIDE rating use ECF (English); if none of these
ratings available then the game is ignored.
2) Unrated players are ignored for rating purposes.
Notes:
English Ratings English Chess Federation grades are available online at http://grading.bcfservices.org.uk/
FIDE Ratings To try and simplify the reporting of outside
results we want to use FIDE grades wherever possible. This has
become easier since FIDE are progressively reducing the
level at which ratings are published. From 2005 the level
was reduced to 1601. FIDE ratings are easy to check since they
are published online.
Unrateds Previously it had been CS policy to make estimates
for unrated players, however after discussions it has been agreed
that this is too complicated (for outside games, estimates will continue
for unrated players in domestic events). Games against unrated players
will be ignored for rating calculations regardless of the result of
the game.
National Not all federations operate rating systems which
produce the same rating number for players of similar strength. The
Chief Grader only has easy access to FIDE or BCF (English) ratings.
It can be extremely difficult to get a verifiable national grade for
some opponents eg the Botswana Rating list might be tricky to get
hold of. So to simplify reporting FIDE or BCF will be used, two easily
checked "foreign" ratings. (July 2003 amendment) It should
also be possible to use Irish and Welsh ratings where appropriate.
Best Judgement The Chief Grader will endeavour to use his
best judgement to modify the above general rules where necessary eg
we usually try and give some sort of credit for all games in Scotland
v Wales and Ireland junior matches. However for the "better"
player it makes sense to operate a simplified, objective system ie
1) Submit all your results 2) FIDE Ratings or ECF used 3) Unrateds
don't count.
Junior additions These will not apply to outside results.
FIDE grades are now published four times a year and should therefore
be able to reflect the improvement of juniors more accurately. ECF
(English) grades already include junior additions.
