John and his wife Lesley used to holiday in the South of Scotland, and after he retired, they moved to Torthorwald, about 4 miles from Dumfries.

He first came to Dumfries chess club in 2006, and was a regular until his health declined in 2013. He was always eager to help in any way he could, and became the treasurer and organized competitions in the club.

In his spare time he did voluntary work.

Despite his health issues he always used to say he was a lucky man. He never had a bad word to say about anyone, and was one of the most positive and inspiring people I've met.

He's missed by everyone at Dumfries chess club.

I knew John well in the 80's where he was instrumental in the chess scene in Lanarkshire, especially on the Junior scene and at cambuslang chess Club. He was always extremely socialable and always good for a laugh or two. He would always have a good few things to say. He is sorely missed.
