Dundee Congress

October 21-23

Keith Rose, Congress Director

The 2005 Dundee Congress was held at the Next Generation Club, Monifieth just outside Dundee . The top tournament, the Manor House Restorations Open contained 29 players included GM Colin McNab, IMs Steve Mannion and Mark Orr, visiting German FIDE Master Gunnar Jacob, currently playing at Castlehill, and a further 6 rated 2000+.

Two other tournaments were held, the Andrew Bolton Opticians Major and the Minor. Both had similar entries to last year.

Unfortunately it was not possible to run a tournament specifically for young players, nevertheless 24 juniors aged under 18 took part in the Congress. In lieu of a junior event The Every Child Nursery Grandmaster Challenge was held on Thursday before the Congress in which schoolchildren were invited to play simultaneous games against GM Colin McNab. Although fewer than expected children attended it was still thoroughly enjoyed by those who did take part.

The Congress itself went down well with most players, the venue coming in for particular praise despite being difficult for non-drivers to get to. The venue contained all amenities, including reduced-price use of the gym and pool facilities, and discounted accommodation was available in the neighbouring Travel Inn.
