CS Primary Team Competition: Tayside/Fife heat
March 25, 2006
Grading data
Glenwood High School, Glenrothes was the venue for last weekend’s Fife and
Tayside qualifying heat for the Chess Scotland Primary Competition.
Eight teams took part. Glenrothes was well represented with two teams from Carleton
and one each from Markinch, Newcastle and St Pauls. Auchtermuchty and Freuchie
flew the flag for north Fife, with Hillside representing Dundee.
Competition was extremely fierce and it was clear after a couple of rounds that, with
only three qualifying places on offer some strong teams were going to miss out.
Newcastle and Markinch were handicapped from the start because only three players
turned up for each team, effectively meaning both schools started each game a point
down – with only four points up for grabs in each match, this was always likely to
prove too much.
With these two out of the running, four teams (Carleton A, St Pauls,
Freuchie and Hillside) were battling for three places. In the end, Carleton narrowly
lost out. Special mention should go to the St Pauls’ team, all of whom where playing
in their first competition. Auchtermuchty, also playing in their first competition, put
in a good performance as well, managing to achieve two draws.
Final Placings (qualifiers in bold) Hillside (7 pts); Freuchie (6); St Pauls (6);
Carleton A (5); Markinch, Newcastle, Carleton B, Auchtermuchty (all 2 points).
