Chess Scotland Juniors
designed by kids, for kids!

2005 Wester Hailes Junior Congress
By Lloyd Hughes

The 2005 event proved very popular and nearly hit 100 entrants with
juniors competing from Perth, Glasgow as well as the Lothian's. The
Premier included five international players and was won by a strong
performance from William McIntosh who drew his last game as he had won
the event with a round to spare!! The Stars-Barred was well contested
and Stuart Watson (Firrhill) played to a high level to win all 6 of his
games. He was closely followed by Escher Mills, who also played some
very good chess. Escher got 5/6 and ensured 2nd place. Xuan Chen
(Sciennes) won the P6/7 Un-graded event with a round to spare so his
final round defeat was of little consequence. The P5&Under event was
very strong but a young Seamus Herron (Parson's Green) with 6/6 who
played much better than his 147 grade.  The event ran smoothly after
some technical glitches early on. Many new players (including the
Stars-Barred winner!!) took part in their first chess event outside
school and really enjoyed it. Keep an eye out for future tournaments in
the Lothian's which will appear on the Chess Scotland calendar and the
Chess Edinburgh pages.
