Quadrangular Tournament – Liverpool 9 – 11 December

By Ian MacGregor

Friday the 9th of December and we arrived on the bus from all over the country. For many it was their first, others it wasn't. The journey went smoothly; some watching Harry Potter, others listening to music. By 10.30pm we reached our destination in Liverpool which was to be our home for the weekend. The first night came and went and we found ourselves by 1.00 in the afternoon sitting behind a chessboard. After a gruelling three hours the U14s emerged with a healthy 7 1/2 - 4 1/2 win against the North of England, whilst the U12s battled it out to the end - unfortunately losing 3 - 9. The break between the rounds was short, to say the least. Another 15 mins passed by and we were back in our chairs; the only difference being different colours, and we were now against the Welsh. Scotland went on to win again; the U12s - not to be phased - managed to pull out a 8 1/2 - 3 1/2 win, whilst the U14s were on a roll with a 10 - 2 win. Well done Scotland!

We returned in high spirits for dinner. I myself enjoyed a Strawberry Sundae and Fish & Chips. We elected captains and Jonathan Wright became the U12s', while I became the U14 one. We returned to the Travelodge to go to our rooms of 3 for sleep...   or should I say the U12s did (Insert Smiley face here.) ! The U14s enjoyed the classic pillow fight, which might be the reason behind my room being late for breakfast.

An early game at around 10.00 and we played our first moves against the Midlands. Overall this wasn't as tight a match as the U14s won 8 1/2 - 3 1/2 and the U12s a comfy 9 - 3. The U14s came first overall and the U12s came second in their event. Notable 3/3 were Joe Pedrosa, Craig Petrie and Daniel McAteer from the U14s. I'm sorry to say I didn't look as closely at the U12s though I think Jonathan Wright got 100% as well. Overall a good job. So well done Scotland, Steve, the Mathies and, last but not least, Donna!
