North East Junior Chess Tournament

By Alana Stewart,P7

On the 5th November 2005, I went to a chess tournament in Newtonhill, it was quite a long travel but we got there in the end.  Erin’s dad took me and Erin, we were playing chess in the car to get warmed up and until we are ready for the first round.  In the first round I beat the person I was playing, he was quite challenging but I beat him and got one point.  That was good.  We finished the round quickly and we had to wait for the next round to begin.  We waited for half an hour and then it started.  I lost that round, I was still happy I had to think, but I wasn’t as good as him.  After that round we I went to eat my lunch, I had a lovely lunch and Erin and I played chess again.  At 12.45 it was the third round and I played a girl, I can’t remember her name though.  We got stalemate that was okay but I would’ve liked a full point.  In the fourth round I beat the person I played and I got another point added on my form.  I was excited.  We had to wait for the fifth round so Erin and I and two other people played doubles.  That was great fun and I think my team won.  The arbiter came down and called us to come and play the fifth round.  That was harder.  I played the arbiter’s daughter and she beat me.  She had to think about her moves and so did I, so I did well.  After that we played an adult.  Erin and I got together and played a man and he was tough. He got us in checkmate, we were amazed.

Finally, it was prize giving and the lady was handing out the prizes.  There were medals and trophies.  I was wondering who would get one.  She called out the ones for medals first and she started with the best P3 and then P4 and so on up to second year.  When she called out the best P7 I was excited.  The lady called out my name.  I was the best primary 7!  She gave me the medal with two chess pieces on it.  I was proud.  Erin’s dad took me home after that and they dropped me off at my house and my mum and dad were really surprised and happy.
