Lothians Secondary Tournament

By Lloyd Hughes

On the 6th of November there was an end to the near dormant secondary school chess scene in Edinburgh-Lothians as a secondary school chess event open to all students going to a secondary school in the Lothians was run in conjunction with the 1st Lothian Primary School Chess League

Day.

17 players entered the event which was a good number to start with. The event will hopefully become an event that occurs three times a year alongside the Primary School League days. The tournament was split into two sections with all entry fee money being given out as prizes!!

The Premier (experienced players) - 6 player all-play-all

1st-  Rhian Hughes  (South Morningside)      5/5 £15

2nd- Chris Christie (St. Augustine's)               4/5 £10

3rd-  Callum Vipond (South Morningside)     3/5 £5

The Challengers (for less experienced players ) 11 player Swiss

1st- Ciaran Rafferty (St. Thomas) 4.5/5 £15

2nd Danny Munroe (Dunbar)       3.5/5 £12 (on tie-break)

3rd Adam Brand (Craigmont)       3.5/5 £10 (on tie-break)

(see grading for more comprehensive results)

The event proved enjoyable, with most saying they would come back for the 2nd event later in the chess season. If you are in a secondary school club in Edinburgh-Lothians and wish to play tournament chess please join us for the next event. (Watch the chess calendar for the entry details).
