Quadrangular tournament 2007
U16 Captain Adam Bremnar
After winning this event by an embarrassingly wide
margin last year, this year’s team could be forgiven for thinking all we had
to do was turn up. The team comprising of Daniel Rocks, Clement Sreeves, Ian MacGregor, myself,
Jamie Hookham and Jonathan Edwards, travelled down
full of confidence especially after seeing our coach, Andrew Green, playing
over his matches from last year. After a late night, the teams were woken
early the next day for coaching and to be given the talk, “You are
representing your country. Don’t take drugs,” and so on.
Round 1 – North of England
We went into this match expecting a comfortable
victory, but both myself and Jonathan were about as good as a sour cream
filled chocolate gateau, (just ask Calum MacQueen how this tastes), and slumped tragically to
defeats. With this shock to the system the team realised we were in trouble.
Fortunately, Jamie’s opponent walked into a mate, Ian won from a completely
lost position, Clement converted his middle game edge, and Daniel did what
came only too naturally for him and took a draw. 3.3-2.5
Round 2 – Midlands of England
This was supposed to be the better English team, but
this time our bottom three boards all vented our anger at the morning’s
results and showed why our team was just better. Three draws from the
remaining boards were enough to win yet again and set us up to win against Wales to take
the title. 4.5-1.5. After preparing the team’s acceptance speech it was off
to get a carvery, with certain people making sure
they got their money’s worth. This is what happens when team FAT is invited
along to coach.
Round 3 – Wales
Yet again in these international tournaments it all
came down to how much we could beat the Welsh by. Yet again we destroyed
them. Their bottom board didn’t even turn up.
Hopefully this pattern of wins will continue for many years.
With the final round over we had won against all
three and every Scottish U16 player had accumulated more points than the
combined Welsh team, this in itself tells the story of the weekend. Thanks
has to go to our coach for his inspirational laptop, Donna for keeping us in
line, Norrie and Maureen for keeping her in line,
and to all the organisers for making this tournament possible.
