Liverpool Quadrangular Tournament 2007

Callum Dickson

In Friday 7th December 2007 the best U12, U14 and U16 players got on the same bus and went down to Liverpool to represent Scotland in the Quadrangular chess tournament.

Unfortunately the U12 did not have their top 3 ranked players Ian McDonald, Daniel Thomas and Robert Childs leaving me to play on board 1.

9 of the 10 boards for the U12’s were new arrivals and hadn’t played for Scotland before, the new players were Aaron Lewis, Peter Rainey, Alice Lampard, Peter Sanders, Kiron Roy, Taylor Panton, Jonathon Blake, Ben he, and Conor Mckay.

The first game was against North England where we lost 7.5 – 2.5 to a much stronger side with a board 1 grade of 1464 compared to my 911. The winners for Scotland U12’s were Taylor Panton and Ben He with Aaron Lewis getting a draw on board 2 – well done to these 3 players.

Our second game was against English Midlands where we were beaten 6.5 – 3.5 again to a stronger side who’s board 1 had a grade of 1576. The players who won were Taylor Panton, Ben He and Conor Mckay and our draw came from Alice Lampard on board 4 – well done again to these players.

On Saturday night we had a team dinner and were told to go to bed at 10pm.

Our final game was against Wales and we probably went into this game as the stonger team. The score finished 5-5 with the wins coming from Callum Dickson, Alice Lampard, Ben He and Conor Mckay and the draws from Peter Rainey and Taylor Panton. Well done to everyone who took part.

I thank the U12’s for voting me captain and I would like to congratulate the team for how many points we got. Our top scorers were Ben He (3/3), Taylor Panton (2.5/3) and Conor Mckay (2/3). Thanks also to Donna Officer, Norrie and Maureen Mathie, Andrew Green  Calum McQueen, Amy Officer and Blair Hawthorne for making sure we got there and back safely.
