“CCCCCCCCCCCHHHHHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEEEECCCCCKKKKKKKK”
thundered Cheeky Clement’s opponent, previously
removing Gigantic Green’s effort from the number one spot. Although Cheeky Clement was winning by
miles he made a subtle under hand deal that his opponent would resign if he
gave him one check.
First
thing was first, get down there. The
bus journey was very long although highly amusing when THE ANIMAL tried to
buy something he wasn’t meant to.
Naughty animal.
Saturday
morning was the usual bucket of fun.
After a relaxed breakfast it came down to who could beat Jakie Jacob at blitz.
The honours went to Sneaky Steve and Monstrous MacQueen. After the gubbing
Jacob received, he decided we really should head to the venue where we found
the format was slightly odd…Scotland are playing Wales…and North England are
playing Wales…after huge confusion we realised it was going to be boards 1+2
playing a round robin against each other, 3+4 against 3+4 etc etc. When it was
all sorted we sat down to do what we do best, beating the Welsh and
English. It all went fabulously except
Beer Belly Blair who was cheapod big time and
Atrocious Amy who drew.
Lunch
was fun with hourglass chess…with a real hourglass. But this came second to food
(naturally). All fat and happy for the
next round (some fatter than others) we powered into the hall and stared our
opponents down. It was another very
good performance by the team, only Cheeky Clement got cheapod
by the same player as Beer Belly Blair.
That evening we headed Brewers Fayre way for lots of food and amusing
anecdotes by Jakie Jacob: the hardest GM is Ivan Sokolov and the heaviest drinker is John Shaw, it had to
be a Scot.
Round
three was very well played by all except one in our team. Monstrous MacQueen lost and the rest won especially Munchkin McGregor who out techniqued
the guy who beat Beer Belly Blair and Cheeky Clement.
I
must say that it was a very good tournament indeed and inventive arbitrating
to make the round systems. A fantastic
tournament, and many thanks to coaches Jakie Jacob, Irritating Ivan, Kleptomaniac Kafka, Sneaky
Steve, Awesome Anne and Pyromaniac Phil.

I would just like to say
a big thank you to everybody who made this fantastic event possible,
especially the chaperones, coaches and Jacob Aagaard. Everybody had a great time and although
there were a few hiccups in the U/16 section, it was a very enjoyable
tournament.
