Quadrangular
Junior Tournament England
Liverpool- England 9-11 December
On Friday the 9th of December 2005 the gathering of
the strongest aged 12-14 chess minds went to the Quadrangular chess
tournament in Liverpool.
The bus ride down was a very relaxing one with the bus driver
kindly putting on Harry Potter and Only Fools and Horses for us to watch. We
reached our hotel about half ten after which we got our rooms and went into
rooms of 3 or 4.
There were lots of new players to the Scottish side especially
in the under 12 section. The new U12 caps were Barnaby Leach, Marc Woods,
Scott Jordan, Kirill Mikhaylov, Jonathan
Scott, Bryan Rettie and Jamie Scott.
The first game was against North England and we unfortunately lost 9-3 to a strong
side who went on to win the whole U12 section. Congratulations though to the U14 team who
managed to win their first round 7.5-4.5, and went on to win the whole U14
tournament.
Our second game was against Wales and we won convincingly
9-3.
Saturday night we went out for a team dinner and we were
eventually sent to bed.
Our final game was against English Midlands, which we won 8.5
to 3.5 so that overall the U12’s came 2nd.
My thanks to the team for voting me captain and playing so
well. Special congratulations to Kirill who scored 3/3 and to Rhian, Ali, Andrew and Jonathan Scott
who all scored 2/3. Rhian on board 1
had some tough games and played well to beat a 1400 and a 1584.
Thanks also to Norrie and Maureen Mathie, Stephen Mannion and of course Donna Officer for
ensuring we all had a good time and yet got home safely!
For those interested, here is an enjoyable win from my last
game…..
