Chess Scotland Juniors
designed by kids, for kids!

I didn’t play in the Glenrothes Congress this year; instead I decided to try my hand at being an arbiter again at the junior tournament which was held on the Saturday of the main congress.  The event was slightly bigger than expected…my mum and I ended up with 82 juniors between P2 and S6 playing!!

The event was a great success despite a (very) late start due to not having enough space to accommodate everybody!!  We never did manage to catch up all the time we lost at the start but we finished relatively close to the published time.

I thoroughly enjoyed my day (literally running around for about 8 hours!) and the players were great and really well behaved!  I was a bit worried at the start because there were so many players and only me and my mum and she was pretty tied up all day with the computer!  But I managed to enlist the help of Jane McCabe who sold puzzles and helped me put up and take down pairing lists for the wall :-D.

Adam Shannon won the event on full points and he wrote a report for me!

Here it is……

My Chess report

In the tournament there were 88 people playing, it was a Swiss-system. Each player had 25mins on each clock. In the first round my opponent did not show up so I was given a 1 point bye and a friendly game. In the second round I got the chance to play someone in the tournament. The result was that I won, so now I have 2 points! In the 3rd round I played someone and I won. In the 4th round I played Peter Devenny the favorite to win. This was a hard game but he made a small blunder in the end-game. So I ended up winning. In the 5th round I played someone who was also pretty good also, so I had some trouble. But I won in the end. In the 6th round I played another hard player but, in the end I won. In the 7th round I played someone else who was also hard but I managed to win with 7 points at the end.
